Potential for Sacredness

1/2/2019

At our recent December staff meeting each one of us shared the three most memorable moments of the past year and two goals for the coming year. As we went around the room sharing, one of the stylists declared her unforgettable goal. “I want to be more loving.” Her statement was felt sincerely by all of us as we sat quietly and took in what the statement meant to each of us. It also made me reconsider my own desires for the coming year. How indeed can I be more loving?

This morning preparing to write the January Snippets, my friend and Patterns of Potential Star Advisor, Arlene Hougland, sent my weekly email inspiration “You Mail” which she personalizes for each person receiving her words of wisdom. It confirmed my best goal I could possibly have for the coming year: to be more loving. It also made me think of what better way to be more loving then to experience all of life as sacred.

This is what Arlene wrote about the meaning of life as sacred:
In our busy, hustle and bustle world, it is easy to lose sight of the sacred things in our life...
We often think of sacred as meaning religious or spiritual. We often lose our grasp on the truth that every moment is ripe with potential for sacredness. It is simply a matter of us infusing our mundane moments with a holy awareness.

The word sacred originating from the Latin sacrare, means to dedicate, to set apart and to make holy. In the Hindu version of sancire, it means “one who must not be criticized”.

Everything we do each day has the potential to be sacred in our life. When we take the time to sense just how special life is, then we can find the contentment in knowing that we are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing at this moment. We can then let go of rushing to the end of each task to get some elusive, perfect, outcome.

There are many books and articles about the value of “mindfulness”. The act of training our mind to focus and stay in the present has benefits that can affect every area of our life. This is making the mundane sacred. This week look at every little task you do as sacred. Instead of feeling as if what you are doing is boring and uninteresting, which leads to trying to find something else better to do, look at your mundane tasks as sacred.

I invite you to allow your mindfulness to spill over into everything you do this week. Avoid imagining your future or becoming overwhelmed by all you have to do. Instead, stay focused on the present with every task, savoring every mundane moment as the sacred gift it is. Make the mundane sacred this week and do your own holy work. See every action and every encounter as holy and sacred.

True holy men and women are not just those who meditate for hours or live in isolation from their fellow humans, but they are the people who get up every morning and look forward to performing every act as if they have been ordained by a higher power to do holy work.
Happy New Year,
Hilda
